ITM Overview
The Institute for High-Performance Fiber Systems Technology: Medicine, Mobility, Energy, Infrastructure (ITM) at TU Dresden is one of the world’s leading university research institutions in the field of high-performance fiber systems technology.
The ITM is affiliated with two faculties: the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine.
To successfully carry out its diverse research projects, the ITM at TU Dresden has a modern infrastructure that enables it to rapidly develop entirely new technologies and innovative products.
ITM’s interdisciplinary research activities span the entire value chain of fiber systems, from polymer synthesis to the final product, including the associated machinery and technology development, as well as process and structural modeling—with a focus on applications in medicine, mobility, energy, and infrastructure, among many others.
These fields in particular require the development of novel filament and hybrid yarn constructions, 2D and 3D semi-finished reinforcement materials, finishing and functionalization techniques, as well as the necessary machinery. CAE pattern designs,
manufacturing techniques for technical textiles, new developments in functional textiles, and measurement and simulation techniques round out the diverse research spectrum at the ITM.
Our main tasks are:
- Providing excellent training for students and doctoral candidates with a solid foundation and up-to-date practical relevance
- Conducting basic research and industry-oriented projects
- Consistent expansion of interdisciplinary collaboration with research institutions from various disciplines and with industry
- Transferring research results into practical applications.
