Studying at ITM
Technical Textiles are ubiquitous, and Germany is the global leader for their production. Engineers working in the textile industries do not design fashionable textiles for clothes brands, but high-tech products with a focus on functionality. Their work is often invisible, but all the more important from a technical perspective. The applications are diverse, ranging from fiber composite materials and medical textiles to textile architecture and membrane constructions. Studying at the ITM will give you the opportunity to become part of this industry as a fledgling engineer. As an ITM student, you will enjoy excellent training and education in an interdisciplinary study environment, with possibilities to specialize in mechanical engineering, material modeling, lightweight construction, measuring and sensor technology, assembly technology, machine development or bio-medical technology.

Studying at ITM
In order to successfully perform teaching and research activities, the ITM is equipped with a unique infrastructure. Of particular importance are both the interdisciplinary research environment provided at TU Dresden and collaborations with numerous external research facilities. These networks support the ITM in rapidly developing innovative machine technologies and products. Also, the ITM conducts top-level research and is among the leading research facilities throughout Europe in the fields of Textile Machinery and Technical Textiles due to its numerous research projects and application-oriented EU, SFB, AiF & ZIM-initiatives.
Studying Machine Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering provides our students with the technical knowledge required for working as an engineer in the industrial sector as well as in research and teaching. A successful graduation in the fields of textile and assembly technology is based on specific mathematical, scientific and engineering knowledge, the ability to independently conduct scientific research and responsible behaviour; all of these skills can be obtained by completing basic studies.
These are the current opportunities to study at the Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Materials:
- Diploma program Mechanical Engineering/ degree course Processing Machines and Textile Machines Engineering incl. specialization in Processing Machines or Textile Machines Engineering
- Master´s degree program in Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology (old course name: Textile and Clothing Technology); previous Bachelor´s degree required
- Specialization in Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology: Diploma program Industrial Engineering (undergraduate degree) or Master´s degree program Industrial Engineering (postgraduate degree)
- Interdisciplinary study opportunities addressing students of all faculties at TU Dresden and other universities within the studium generale program, special lectures, experts´seminars, assignments or Diploma/Master´s theses as well as foreign exchange students on the Erasmus or E-Team program.
