Of thin triangles and parallel lines
We learned the basics of geometry at school. We know that the shortest connection between two points is a straight line or that the sum of the interior angles in a triangle is always 180 degrees. But what if all this is not true - or not always true?
In this lecture, we go on a journey into hyperbolic geometry, the discovery of which revolutionized mathematics in the 19th century.
Anna Wienhard is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. Her research interests lie at the interface between geometry, topology and dynamic systems. In conversation with Andreas Thom, she explains, among other things, the extent to which hyperbolic geometry has recently been applied in artificial intelligence.
