Guide to proposing the assessors of the thesis for the doctorate in physics
As the doctorate candidate you make a proposition as to the assessors of your thesis. At least two and at most three assessors have to be appointed. Note that the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and the Doctorate Committee of the School of Science (“Promotionsausschuss”) need not adhere to your proposition.
Instructions:
-
The first assessor is a university lecturer (“Hochschullehrer”) at the School of Science. Normally this is your supervising professor or junior professor at the Faculty of Physics who agreed to become your supervisor when you were accepted as a PhD candidate.
-
One of the assessors should have his affiliation outside Dresden; one (usually the same) of the assessors must not have been involved in supervising the dissertation.
-
Generally, the following persons qualify for assessing a doctoral thesis: professors at German and foreign universities, junior professors, professors at a “Fachhochschule”, or any person whose scientific merits fulfil the requirements of the “Habilitation”. In particular, also honorary and “außerplanmäßige” professors as well as scientist holding a “Habilitation” degree and “TUD Young Investigators” may act as assessor.
-
As a rule, the majority of the assessors should be university professors. Therefore, a third assessor may be necessary. In particular, this is true if your direct supervisor is a “Privatdozent” or a TUD young investigator whom you would also like to propose as one of your assessors.
-
In any case you should ask your supervising professor for advice.
In any case of doubt it is solely the German text of the law and of the Doctorate Regulations of the School of Science that is legally binding.
