Seminar: Searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge (Bernhard Schwingenheuer)
01069 Dresden
Neutrinos are the only fundamental fermions in the Standard Model
without electric charge. In addition their mass is tiny compared to one of other fermions. It is therefore speculated that the standard Higgs coupling is
not the only mechanism that is responsible for their mass. In this case
neutrinos will be their own antiparticles. This feature could explain the
matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe and result in double beta decay without
neutrino emission for isotopes like 76Ge. A first phase of the LEGEND experiment recently started data taking searching for this decay mode. The talk will discuss the motivation and status of the field with emphasis on LEGEND.
