Further information for "Research Practice"
The goal of the “Research Practice ”, defined in its module description (Phy-Ma-Warb), is to acquire the ability to apply substantive and methodological knowledge toward solving a scientific problem and to perform independent work on a research topic. It creates, in accordance with §5 SO, the groundwork for independently processing a scientific idea in a specialized area of physics, for the integration into a research team, for representing results in compliance with the rules of good scientific practice, for dealing with critical questions, and for learning to write a research paper.
The module requires a registration specifying the topic according to SO § 6 Abs. 6. The registration form is provided by the Examination Office. According to PO §4 (3) Sentence 2, registration for the module examination is automatically made when registering for the module. The date of the exam (the scientific defense) can be set by the examiner (usually the mentor). The date should be set in mutual agreement between student and mentor and should be within the 6 month duration of the module. The right to cancel the module examination according to PO §4 (2) Sentence 2 is unaffected by the automatic registration. The student may choose to perform the defense in english or german language. Since the Master’s Thesis must commence no later than 1 month after the final module examination (usually the defense of the research practice), a defense date within the last four weeks of the module is recommended. Like for the Bachelor’s thesis, the fixing of the defense date proceeds with a separate form available at the Examination Office, in consultation with the supervisor. The student receives the Master’s Thesis form at the same time. The organizational process and details for completing these forms are described in the “Leitfaden des Prüfungsausschusses” (Guide of the Examination Committee).
Competences from the modules “Experimental Physics”, “Theoretical Physics”, “Main Seminar”, “Physics Specialisation” and “Non-physics Minor” are a pre-requisite of the scientific work. The determination of any missing pre-requisites, and how to address them, is made by the supervisor of the student’s research practice (for example, the topic of the research practice could be specified only once all missing examinations are passed or at least scheduled and interfering only little with the research practice). The Guide of the Examination Committee recommends that all examinations should be complete or, at minimum, a date for outstanding examination(s) should be planned when commencing the scientific work.
