Aptitude Assessment
Process of application and aptitude assessment of the Master's program Physics
The application for the Master's program Physics is a two-step procedure:
- Step 1: the actual application for the Master's program
- Step 2: the request for aptitude assessment at the Department of Physics to verify the required specialized knowledge and language skills
Please take note of the different deadlines of the aptitude assessment and the application for the Master's program. They are summarized in the Study Informations System of TU Dresden. Also note that documents may need to be uploaded twice to the different online portals.

Admission requirements
Requirements for admission to the Master's degree program Physics:
- Completion of a first professionally qualifying university degree that is recognized in Germany or a degree from a state or state-recognized university of cooperative education in the field of physics or a degree program with a closely related subject area,
- Sound specialized knowledge
- of the fundamentals of experimental physics in the area of mechanics, heat and thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, quantum physics, atomic and molecular physics, as well as solid state physics or nuclear physics or particle physics or biological physicss
- of the fundamentals of theoretical physics in the area of theoretical mechanics, theoretical electrodynamics, theoretical quantum mechanics, as well as statistical physics or theoretical thermodynamicss
- physics laboratory training, including programming skills, and
- mathematical training
- Proficiency in English at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
Step 1: Application for the degree program
You must submit your application for the degree program within the respective deadline through the
Online application entry point of TU Dresden.
- After answering the questions in the application section, you will be guided to the corresponding application portal.
- Within the application process, you may be asked to upload a submission confirmation of your aptitude assessment request. In this case, you need to complete step 2 before you can complete step 1.
- The are separate online portals for the application to the study program and for the aptitue assessment request. You may therefore be asked to upload certain documents to both portals.
Step 2: Aptitude assessment request
For the aptitude assessment of this degree program the following documents are required in an electronic format (PDF):
- Copy of the original and officially certified translation (German or English) of the degree certificate of the required first university degree including official transcript of records; if the first university degree is not yet available a copy of the original and officially certified translation (German or English) of the official transcript of records is required together with a certificate that 80% of the credits required for the current university degree program have been completed
- Copy of the syllabus (curriculum) with a description of the completed modules; if this document is not available in English or German, a corresponding translation needs to be provided;
- Proof of proficiency in English at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by a copy of one of the following certificates:
- certificate of general or subject-specific university entrance qualification with a basic or advanced course in English (or comparable levels), or
- certificate for admission to higher education completed in English or a higher education graduation certificate completed in English, or
- TOEFL language certificate with a total score of at least 72 and a score of at least 17 in each category
- IELTS language certificate with a score of at least 5.5 in each category
- UNIcert language certificate at level II or higher.
- Curriculum vitae documenting your educational career
- Other certificates which document your aptitude for the degree program.
IMPORTANT: Submission of the request for aptitude assessment and of the relevant documents
- All applicants must submit the online request for aptitude assessment and all relevant documents to the Online Aptitude Assessment Portal of the Department of Physics.
- The request for aptitude assessement must be completed before the relevant deadline.
The are separate online portals for the application to the study program and for the aptitue assessment request. You may therefore be asked to upload certain documents to both portals.
If the aptitude has not already been established from the applicant's documents, an online assessment interview will be held by the Admissions Committee. The invitation to the online assessment interview will be sent by e-mail at least two weeks before the date of the interview.
You will receive the result of the aptitude assessment by e-mail in a timely manner. The result of the aptitude assessment will also be taken into account in the application process for the Master's program.
