Study on excluded gamblers from casinos - CEGG Project
Project PI: Gerhard Bühringer, Associate: Dr. Roxana Kotter
Run time: 11/2015 to 06/2018
Funding: Federal Association of German Casinos founded in 2008 as BupriS e.V.
As part of a Ph.D. project, three works were carried out on gambling exclusion. The first paper (Kotter, Kräplin, Pittig, & Bühringer, 2018) presents an international literature overview of the research on exclusion programmes to date. Important results are that the playing behaviour after self-exclusion often shows clear reduction. In addition, some characteristics of mental health are also improving.
For the second study, 215 self- and forced-excluded gamblers from German casinos were examined, a subgroup of them in a personal interview with standardized clinical instruments. The majority of the excluded gamblers reported a reduced or abstinent playing behaviour, but this did not change significantly in other areas of gamling not affected by the exclusion. Those who were excluded by others and by themselves reported comparable reductions in playing behaviour (Kotter, Kräplin, & Bühringer, 2017).
The third work dealt with the mental health of excluded gamblers, including the prevalence of mental disorders and their chronological order (Kotter, Kräplin, Pittig & Bühringer, 2019). The proportion of people with comorbid mental disorders is high. In most cases, other mental disorders preceded the GS in time. The exclusions are usually carried out much too late.
