Analogous to the research results on the connection between alcohol offers and alcohol-related disorders, it has often been assumed in practice and politics that there is also a direct connection with gambling offers. Too little consideration was given to the fact that the harmful psychotropic substance, for which a direct relationship between the amount consumed and the extent of the damage is known, does not play a role in games of chance and therefore the postulated direct relationship may not exist or exists only in a modified form.
As a result of the assumption of a direct link, measures to reduce supply (reduction in the number of gaming halls and betting outlets, distance regulations) were preferred as consumer protection measures, while qualitative measures such as information and feedback on the course of the game, 5 warnings, staff training, limits of time gambled and stakes and exclusion from gambling were not sufficiently implemented.
