insight behind the scenes of the Long Night against Procrastination: an interview with the organizers
On March 3, 2022, it's that time again: The Long Night against Progractination ("Lange Nacht des Schreibens" in German, "LNDS" for short) is just around the corner. This year, the participants can expect a special feature: In addition to the Writing Center of the TU Dresden (Schreibzentrum der TU Dresden - SZD) and the SLUB Dresden, the libraries and writing centers of the universities of Darmstadt and Stuttgart will also participate this year.
Organizing such an event is of course costly. Nina Melching from SZD and Anita Santner from SLUB are the main organizers for this year's LNDS and have already had many organizational meetings.
Here they give a little insight behind the scenes of the writing event.
What do you enjoy most about organizing the Long Night?
Anita: I really enjoy the event itself, but especially the collaboration with the colleagues from Darmstadt and Stuttgart, a premiere this year. On the one hand, it's interesting to be able to think outside the box and see what other cities, universities, and writing centers have to offer, and on the other hand, to realize that in many respects we are all in the same boat.
Nina: The pleasant cooperation and the constructive, solution-oriented, uncomplicated collaboration, both in the supraregional organization team and in the various working groups of our writing center. That gives me a lot of positive energy. - And the conceptual work, such as thinking about the target groups, developing concepts for services, and creatively spinning out new ideas.
What is the biggest challenge for you in the organization?
Anita: Probably reconciling the different organizational and legal frameworks of the institutions involved: different data protection regulations, different eLearning and registration systems that can't communicate with each other, ... etc.
Nina: I agree with Anita on this one. I also find it challenging that we can always think of something else that could have been done or should have been considered differently. At some point you have to say: Now is good; we'll keep a record of new ideas for next year.
What program item are you most looking forward to this year?
Anita: Phew, that's a difficult question.... I think that we have really put together a very wide range of workshops this year and it would probably be difficult for me to choose one or the other. But actually I'm looking forward to the kick-off, when we (hopefully) sit in front of a lot of motivated faces on the screen, find out from where the people are connected and then get started together! And I don't want to miss the eye training and yoga, that will do me incredible good after the long hours in front of the screen.
Nina: I'm very curious to see whether we'll hit a nerve again this year with the writing space and the tomato method. If I weren't twirling around organizationally, I would love to use the writing space to work on my own writing. In any case, I'd like to step away for a moment to think outside the box and attend the talk "Eating with brains - food for our brains."
The Digital Long Night of Writing 2022 will take place on March 3 from 4pm to midnight. You can expect exciting workshops, writing consultations, a writing room for concentrated work and more. For more information and the program, visit the Long Night against Procrastinantion 2022 website.
The interview was conducted by Annica Kramer. Annica studies media research and has been working at the Writing Center since the end of 2020. There she supports the public relations and is mainly responsible for the newsletter. She also gives workshops and writing consultations.
