Qualification of writing tutors
What do writing tutors do at the Writing Center?
Writing tutors primarily support students in individual writing consultations with questions about their writing process - from the initial idea to the text ready for submission - and provide text feedback on writing projects. In addition, they can get involved in various areas of activity at the Writing Center, e.g.
- Contributing their own ideas and creativity to the conception of our offers and events,
- Initiating and leading writing groups,
- Developing handouts on academic writing,
- Participating in the Long Night of Writing and the Writing Marathon.
How do I become a writing tutor at the Writing Center?
The Writing Center advertises positions for Student Assistants once a year, for which students from all Departments can apply. Future writing tutors undergo in-depth training to prepare them to support students in their writing process:
- They acquire the basics of process-oriented writing didactics,
- reflect on their own approaches to writing an academic text,
- deal with the individual phases and challenges in the writing process,
- expand their knowledge of writing strategies/techniques,
- build up a toolbox of methods,
- learn how to provide writing advice and
- practise consultation and feedback methods.
They are introduced to their work as writing tutors step by step through observations, trial consultations and intensive support in reflection discussions.
The qualification is completed with a certificate.
During their work at the writing center, the writing tutors are accompanied by reflection meetings, exchange their experiences in the writing consultation colloquium, take part in further training and thus continuously develop themselves further. On the blog jederkannschreibenlernen.wordpress.com a writing tutor reports on her qualification in 2018, in our news article there is an insight into the start of the qualification of the writing consultation 2021.
The writing center is based on the framework concept for the qualification of writing tutors of the Society for Writing Didactics and Writing Research: http://www.schreibdidaktik.de/images/Downloads/RahmenkonzepPeerSchreibtutor_innenausbildg.pdf.
