Not afraid of new things: May’s alumnus comes from the Computer Science
Dr. Hendrik Strobelt is the Alumnus of the Month for May 2026
How does artificial intelligence make decisions? This is one of the questions that Dr. Hendrik Strobelt is exploring. A former computer science student at TUD, he is the Alumnus of the Month for May. Today, he lives and works in the United States and is currently conducting research on artificial intelligence as a senior research scientist at IBM in Cambridge. One goal, for example, is to break down tasks for large AI models into smaller programs that can be run on a laptop.
Looking back on his computer science studies at TUD, Hendrik Strobelt admits that he can hardly use the material he learned back then anymore, as things in computer science change rapidly. What has remained, however, are fundamental principles: “Don’t be afraid of the new, abstraction as a core competency for computer science, and a holistic view of problems,” he reflects.
