There are countless species of sweet cherry worldwide. These are generally divided into early-ripening, heart-shaped cherries and late-ripening, more firm varieties. The cultivation of sweet cherries began in ancient times, and the Romans spread them throughout Europe as a cultivated form. Today's sweet cherries (Prunus avium subsp.) are the native cultivated forms of the wild cherry.
Sweet cherries flower very early in the year and generate their flower buds in the previous year. They depend on cross-pollination or animal pollination and should therefore be planted next to each other. They are important bird food trees and an excellent nectar source.
