A TUD landmark is now visible again - Beyer Building with renovated dome
Under the direction of the Dresden II branch of the Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement (SIB) state enterprise, the Beyer Building on the TU Dresden campus is undergoing a general renovation in keeping with its status as a listed building. After the observatory dome, which weighs approx. 12 tonnes, was lifted down in March 2022 due to construction and the tower façade was removed, extensive concrete renovation work took place on the severely damaged and overloaded tower structure. In addition, a steel substructure was installed to improve the load situation. Thus, the repair of the supporting structure of the 40-metre-high tower of the Beyer Building with the dome of the Lohrmann Observatory has been successfully completed. At the same time, the lifting platform with the dome drive located inside the observatory dome was renovated. Now it was time to lift up and reassemble the dome together with its internal technology.
Today (19.10.2023), a 250-tonne mobile crane was erected on George Bähr Straße. On 17 and 18 October, the lifting platform was assembled. As planned, the dome was put in place today.
For the assembly work, an auxiliary construction from the time of construction was again built, consisting of steel, a lower hexagonal ring to hold the dome as well as a spatial truss arranged inside the dome and outside around the dome.
The tower façade has been fundamentally altered several times in the building's history to date. The new façade is intended to provide a modern interpretation of the original tower façade from the time of construction using new materials. This will be done with glass façade and light metal elements. In the lower part of the tower, smaller reconstructions based on historical models will complement the listed building.
The fundamental renovation of the Beyer Building is a complex task and involves a great deal of effort. Since its construction, the building has served as accommodation for civil engineers and astronomers and will also be restored for these fields of study. The financing framework is around 73 million euros. About 10 million euros of this comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The Free State's share amounts to about 63 million euros. The construction project is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget passed by the Saxon state parliament.
