Conducting a legally required, unannounced full-scale security drill at the AKR-2 training research reactor at TUD

On September 8, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., an unannounced full-scale emergency response drill began at the AKR-2 training research reactor at TUD Dresden University of Technology. The drill simulates a fire at the facility. The drill, which is required by law, involves all authorities and facilities necessary for emergency response at TUD, the City of Dresden, and the Free State of Saxony.

After the alarm is triggered, the TU Dresden’s on-site fire department is the first to respond. Shortly thereafter, personnel from the city’s professional fire department at the Übigau and Löbtau fire stations also arrive at the scene. While the fire department carries out rescue operations and firefighting, the TUD crisis management team and the Radiation Protection Advisory Group at the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture (SMUL)—the competent licensing authority for the operation of the AKR-2—are convened. In addition, personnel from the Dresden City Police, the State Police, and the emergency medical services are involved in the operation.

The goal of the exercise is, on the one hand, the combined implementation of operational and tactical hazard mitigation measures by the Dresden Professional Fire Department and the TU Dresden’s in-house fire department. On the other hand, the exercise will practice the establishment and collaboration of a joint, virtual command staff comprising representatives from the participating organizations to coordinate the necessary administrative measures. The full-scale exercise will end around 12:00 p.m.
