„Engineering for our Future!“ The ADeKo Joint Korean-German Conference - in Dresden for the first time
The ADeKo conference is one of the most important pillars of Korean-German co-operation and was previously held in the Korean capital Seoul. This year the hosts will be the state capital Dresden, the Technische Universität Dresden as well as ADeKO, the alumni network Germany-Korea.
The 8th Joint Korean-German ADeKo Conference will take place from 16th until 18th November 2016 – for the first time in Dresden. The series of conferences by the alumni network Germany-Korea (ADeKo) is among the most important events in the Korean-German co-operation and previously has only been held in the South Korean capital Seoul. Considering the internationally acclaimed research in Dresden and the existing, close scientific and economic relationships between the two countries, it has been decided to accept the invitation by the state capital Dresden and to bring the conference to Germany for this first time.
The goal of the conferences is to provide a platform for the exchange of research projects, to promote the research co-operation between the two countries and to strengthen the knowledge transfer into the industry. Prior events were dedicated to topics such as “Green Growth against Climate Change”, “Basic Science”, “Research and Industry” or “Science and Innovation!” which have been very well received. Up to 500 participants have attended these conferences. For the Dresden 2016 exhibition a conference concept has been developed entitled “Engineering for our future”, which provides a broad thematic spectrum pertaining to micro- and nanoelectronics. Numerous sessions will deal with new and innovative developments in fields such as 5G & Tactile Internet, Robotics, Future Electronics, Energy Transition in Micro/Nano Electronics, Digital Products and eHealth. In particular with regards to Start-Ups the topic of knowledge and know-how transfer will take a pivotal role in the events agenda.
The significance of the conference is underlined by scores of prominent participants: At the opening event Hwangsik Kim, former Korean Prime Minister and ADeKo’s current Chairman of the Board as well as Stanislaw Tillich, Saxon Prime Minister will give their welcoming addresses. On the eve of the conference the Korean Ambassador to Germany, Lee Kyoung Soo and the Saxon Prime Minister will host a festive reception.
The scientific Supervising Board of the conference will be presided by Prof. Gerhard Fettweis of TU Dresden’s Vodafone Chair Mobile Communications Systems. Prof. Fettweis is also the coordinator of the Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden Cluster of Excellence as well as of the 5G Labs Germany. Thus, it is only consistent that the mobile communications expert also chairs the scientific session which deals with “Future Electronics – 5G and Tactile Internet”.
Visits to companies and research institutions as well as guided city tours form part of the conference’s agenda. A cultural highlight will be the performance of the international university choir of the Dresden Music Academy during the opening ceremony with a large number of Korean students participating. Christoph Pollmann, Head of the DAAD Seoul office and coordinator of the ADeKo Conference Dresden 2016 stresses the international aspect of this event: “I think that this conference is a unique opportunity to solidify the diverse relationships and to bring people together who would like to positively promote Dresden as a prime research and education location.”
The conference is jointly organised by: the Alumni Network Germany-Korea (ADeKo), the state capital Dresden, the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), the RWATH Aachen, the Fraunhofer Society, the Korea Institute of Science & Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP) and the Korean Scientists and Engineers Association in the FRG (VeKNI).

ADeKO
The Alumni Network Germany-Korea is the world’s largest and only country network of Korean Germany alumni. It was established in 2006 with the support of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. Since 2013 ADeKo is a registered association at the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. https://www.adeko.or.kr/deu
cfaed
TU Dresden’s Cluster of Excellence for Microelectronics comprises eleven research institutes among them: the Technische Universität Chemnitz as well as two Max-Planck institutes, two Fraunhofer institutes, two Leibniz institutes and the Helmoltz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf. Around 300 scientists research novel technologies for electronic data processing through nine different research paths. They utilise innovative materials like silicon nanowires, carbon nanotubes or polymers. Furthermore, they develop completely new concepts such as the chemical chip or manufacturing processes using self-assembling structures e.g. DNA-origami. Their goals are to improve energy efficiency, reliability and ensure a smooth interaction of the different components. In addition, biological communication systems are analysed in order to take inspiration from nature and convert it to technology. This unique approach combines results-driven natural sciences and innovation-orientated engineering to form an interdisciplinary research platform in Saxony. https://www.cfaed.tu-dresden.de
5G Lab Germany
The 5G Lab Germany at TU Dresden is an interdisciplinary team of nearly 600 scientists from 22 research areas of TUD. It is jointly chaired by Prof. Gerhard Fettweiss and Prof. Frank Fitzek. The goal is to deliver key technologies for the development of the 5G mobile communication standard. The research is conducted in four areas: Wireless & Networks, Tactile Internet Applications, Silicon Systems and Mobile Edge Cloud. There are more than 50 allied industry partners, among them: Vodafone, National Instruments, Nokia, Rohde & Schwarz, NEC, Claas, Ericsson und Deutsche Telekom. The Cluster of Excellence “Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden” supports the 5G Lab through its three system-orientated research areas: Orchestration, Resilience and Highly-Adaptive Energy-Efficient Computing (HAEC). https://www.5glab.de
