Living Library on the Day for Tolerance

To mark the International Day for Tolerance, TUD’s Directorate University Culture is hosting a "living library" on November 17. The dialog format transforms people who have experienced discrimination and exclusion for various reasons into books to tell their stories. As is the case in a classic library, readers can borrow these books for a limited time. This means that they have twenty minutes for a one-on-one conversation with their chosen person. There are a few ground rules: Generally, all questions may be asked. Even those that you might not otherwise dare to ask. Of course, the books are free to decide how much they want to share. A moderation team is also always nearby.

The living library inspires conversations between individuals who would probably have never met under different circumstances. The books share views and experiences that all too often fall upon deaf ears – for example from life with a disability, mental illness or the experience of refuge and migration. In hearing these perspectives, readers are encouraged to question their opinions and broaden their horizons. The event provides a safe space for sharing and listening.

The living library will take place on November 17 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Kulturcafé of the Johannstädter Kulturtreff (Elisenstraße 35, 01307 Dresden). Readers can drop by at any time and do not need to register in advance. Coaches from the group Jeder Mensch organize the event and are also responsible for the well-being of the books.
