“MINT meets Art” at TU Dresden – Students present artistic interpretations of meta-materials
Students from St. Afra present their artwork on data-driven research into resilient metamaterials at the Zeuner Building of TU Dresden. The exhibition will be on display from January 16, 2026.
The exhibition “MINT meets Art” will be on display in the Zeuner Building of TUD Dresden University of Technology in front of rooms 340 to 354 from January 16, 2026. The artists attend grades seven through ten at the Sächsisches Landesgym Sankt Afra in Meissen. Their seven artworks interpret mathematical and data-driven structures from research on meta-materials.
Artistic interpretation of meta-materials
Meta-materials are artificially constructed materials whose properties exceed those of the base material. These materials can have extraordinary mechanical properties. In research — for example, in Research Training Group 2868 — resilient meta-materials are optimized based on data and designed to be sustainable. The high degree of abstraction in this research also inspires artistic exploration of meta-materials.
From research to art
As part of the Profundum courses, school students experienced the day-to-day research work of the graduate college at first hand: from lab visits to data analysis workshops. Under the guidance of Dr. Anja Krause, Ulrike Gebhardt, and other scientists, the participants learned how mathematical models can be translated into visual patterns – from geometric curves to fields to animated shapes.
Background: Profundum “MINT meets Art”
“MINT meets Art” brings science to life and encourages creative engagement with complex topics in the natural sciences and engineering. The project shows that students can find intuitive approaches to mathematics, physics, and materials research when these subjects are visually presented.
