After positive decision for Dresden's application for BUGA 2033: TUD will continue to accompany the project intensively and constructively
The German Federal Garden Show Society (DBG) has officially accepted the bid of the state capital Dresden to host the Federal Garden Show (BUGA) 2033. At its shareholders' meeting, the members voted unanimously in favor of the Saxon state capital. Dresden had applied to host the event in 2033 on the basis of the BUGA 2033 feasibility study "Rubble areas awaken to vibrant green spaces".
For the state capital of Dresden, accepting the bid for BUGA 2033 paves the way for an important urban development project in the coming years. The Federal Horticultural Show is a unique opportunity for the city to drive forward important processes of integrated urban and regional development in a period of less than ten years. In essence, projects for green, sustainable and ecological urban design are to be implemented and enriched with young and fresh ideas through close networking with the TUD Dresden University of Technology.
Jan Gerken, Chancellor of TU Dresden, emphasizes: "In none of the previous BUGAs has there been such close networking between the university and the city as in 'our' BUGA Dresden. This is a special feature that we should continue to live up to! The first sketch of ideas was the result of good cooperation between the city and the TUD - and the feasibility study directly includes the TUD campus as well as other locations such as the Botanical Garden or Tharandt in the exhibition concept. The BUGA ultimately stands for the good cooperation between the city and the University of Excellence; and we continue to assure the city of Dresden of all our support. We look forward to a lively and constructive further process!"
Prof. Catrin Schmidt, Director of the Institute of Landscape Architecture at TU Dresden and involved in the conception of the Dresden BUGA from the very beginning, adds: "TU Dresden has a special affinity with the BUGA for several reasons. On the one hand, we have unique botanical collections, for example in Zuschendorf, Tharandt and of course in the Botanical Garden Dresden. On the other hand, we play a special role in the history of landscape architecture nationwide - it was here in Dresden that the first Diplom degrees bearing the term 'landscape architecture' were awarded. Even today, landscape architects are trained at the TUD, i.e. precisely those who plan and design BUGAs. In addition, the Südpark, one of the central exhibition areas of the BUGA, is directly adjacent to the TUD campus. So there are many interfaces."
"I am proud that the intensive work of recent months has paid off and that the state capital of Dresden will be able to host the first BUGA in Saxony. I would like to thank the German Federal Horticultural Show Society for the trust they have placed in us. Now it is no longer just a case of 'Dresden can host a BUGA', but also 'Dresden is BUGA'. I look forward to continuing to work on this joint project in the interests of the people of Dresden, the surrounding area and the entire Free State of Saxony," said Dresden's Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert.
The DBG shareholders see the Federal Garden Show as a great opportunity for Dresden and have therefore unanimously accepted the application. The feasibility study offers exciting approaches to preserving the ruins in the city as places of remembrance. Promising core areas are planned, and we are also convinced by the concepts for long-term preservation. We attach great importance to the future-oriented, sustainable continued use of the garden show areas.
Hajo Hinrichs, Chairman of the DBG shareholders' meeting
We are delighted that Dresden will be hosting the Federal Garden Show 2033. With the BUGA, urban and regional development can be decisively advanced in the coming years. Dresden has great potential for a highly interesting and successful Federal Garden Show.
DBG Managing Director Achim Schloemer
Before making its decision, the DBG Board of Directors toured the city of Dresden on February 25 and 26, 2024. DBG will make the final decision once the implementation contract has been signed. Once the contracts have been signed, BUGA Dresden 2033 gGmbH can be founded. The state capital of Dresden and DBG will soon seal their joint plans for the Federal Garden Show in 2033.
