Science after hours – Dresden Science Night is on June 30, 2023
The 20th Dresden Science Night will take place on Friday, June 30, starting at 5:00 pm with about 50 organizations taking part. The program will feature over 1,000 presentations, hands-on activities, workshops and tours given by scientists to guests of all ages, providing exciting insight into local research. More than 300 of these events will take place in English, making them accessible to a broader international audience.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Dresden Science Night, the Kulturpalast across from the Altmarkt square will serve as an event hub, hosting a live recording of the podcast “You ask – we explain” with prominent prizewinners of the Dresden Excellence Awards. This time, the podcast asks the question: “How does science change society and how does society change science?” Visitors will be able to find exciting program points all around the city and the surrounding areas from Pillnitz to Tharandt. Most events will again take place around the TUD Dresden University of Technology campus. Rector Prof. Ursula Staudinger invites visitors to take part in the adventure: “At TU Dresden, we are currently working on key topics affecting humanity today – climate change, the energy transition, resource scarcity, robotics, AI, mobility of the future and much more. For Dresden Science Night, we will be exhibiting our excellent research and making science tangible for visitors. Join us on a tour of our campuses and witness firsthand the enthusiasm our researchers bring to their work!”
Over half of the events are child-friendly, including the athletic “lab Olympics” at TU Dresden and the “vehicle tug-of-war” at the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Dresden. The municipal libraries of Dresden will draw you in with their puppet theater about an adventurous mouse who travels to the moon. The program also includes eight events where participants in the “JUNIORDOKTOR” program for gifted schoolchildren can gain new insights and collect stamps.
Dresden Science Night is organized by the “Dresden – City of Science” network and the City of Dresden. In addition to the city’s universities and institutes, more and more private research companies are taking part. And Dresden’s public transportation authority DVB will help you get around – if you’re traveling to or from a Dresden Science Night event, you can ride trams and buses for free without a ticket from 4:00 pm to 1:00 am. More frequent rides and special routes will be available.
