TU Dresden commemorates the 85th anniversary of the November pogroms with four public events
Münchner Platz Memorial for the victims of politicized criminal justice during the National Socialist dictatorship, the Soviet occupation, and the early years of the German Democratic Republic.
On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the November pogroms, TU Dresden, in cooperation with several partner institutions of the City of Dresden, invites the public to a series of events exploring remembrance, human rights, and social justice. All events will provide opportunities for open dialogue and interdisciplinary discussion.
In addition to free tours and film screenings, the program includes a piano concert performed by Polish pianist Katarzyna Wasiak with a book presentation on Jewish life in Wrocław from 1933-1949, and previously unknown photographs of the Wrocław deportation point. The event series will launch at the Deutsches Hygiene Museum with a discussion on the contemporary reception of Veit Harlan’s antisemitic propaganda film, “Jud Süß,” with historian Prof. Bill Niven
The November pogroms of 1938 marked a significant escalation of antisemitic violence in Nazi Germany. The aggression against and murder of Jewish people, and the destruction of synagogues, businesses and homes during Kristallnacht, also known as the “Night of the Broken Glass,” is a dark part of history that led to the systematic execution of millions of people and can be traced back to the antisemitic and repressive policies of a National Socialist regime. With these commemorative events, TU Dresden is doing its part to ensure that the cruelty of persecution and discrimination is not forgotten.
