TU Dresden supports the DresdenZero citizen’s initiative
The City of Dresden intends be climate neutral by 2035. TU Dresden is backing the goal set out by the DresdenZero citizens' initiative: "Ecological sustainability and the joint fight against climate change are amongst the most pressing challenges of our time. We can only achieve this by working together. This is why we are supporting this initiative launched by the local community in Dresden," explains Professor Roswitha Böhm, Vice-Rector University Culture.
For TU Dresden, this support also translates into a stimulus to reduce the university’s own carbon footprint, with the help of scientific expertise, for example. Due to various indirect emissions, however, the university is dependent on collaboration with the City of Dresden, especially in terms of traffic, mobility and city planning – notably at Südpark.
"We are delighted that the State Capital of Dresden is one of one hundred cities selected for the EU Mission 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030." Innovative paths to climate neutrality will be developed as part of this mission, for which the city's residents will also be actively involved. "With the DresdenZero initiative, Dresden has an excellent basis for this objective," Böhm is convinced.
The DresdenZero initiative is aiming to collect at least 30,000 signatures by June 17, 2022 for a citizen’s petition with a view to passing a legally binding resolution in the City Council on the climate neutrality of Dresden by 2035. The initiative demands an update of the City of Dresden’s integrated energy and climate protection strategy to include a roadmap with concrete measures to achieve this goal.
