From Building Bridges to Tackling Obesity – Enrollment Opens for the Dresden Seniors’ Academy

The end of the summer semester also saw a "Brücke hike", in which senior citizens who enjoyed hiking went on a tour of remembrance of the Brücke artists in Moritzburg in May under the expert guidance of Christian Kunath, an expert on Saxon history.
The new semester of the DSA once again offers great variety
The Dresden Senior Citizens' Academy (DSA) is offering around 250 courses in science, economics, society, art, medicine, and history in the 2025/2026 winter semester, for which registration will open on September 29, 2025. It is primarily thanks to voluntary work and with the support of partners such as TU Dresden that these courses are on offer.
New to the program is a workshop on home networks. Focus areas in digital education include, for example, health apps and AI. The basic smartphone course will continue with advanced sessions, and once a month there will be a digital consultation hour. General lectures and seminars will cover topics such as “The Dresden Theme – Bridge Building,” “Economic Development in Saxony 2025,” and “Semaglutide: From Diabetes Medication to a Miracle Weapon Against Obesity.” There will also be a commemoration of historical figures such as Louise Otto-Peters (1819–1895), who made a name for herself in the early women’s movement in Saxony. One lecture is dedicated to the British explorer Gertrude Bell (1868–1926), the first European woman who truly knew and understood the Arabs.
Hands-on learning opportunities include guided tours of the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau, Glatfelter Paper Manufacturing in Heidenau, and the Innovation Power Plant in Reick. Educational walks in Dresden are very popular among participants. In the winter semester, these walks will include routes through the Ostragehege, the Hecht district, and the Leutewitz neighborhood. Lectures at the Saxon State and University Library (SLUB) remain a regular part of the program. This time, the schedule includes, among other topics, the historical sources of the Moravian Brethren.
On educational trips with partner Eberhardt TRAVEL, participants can, for example, attend the Mendelssohn Festival at Leipzig’s Gewandhaus featuring Anne-Sophie Mutter, or experience a miners’ “Mettenschicht” in the Marie-Louise tunnel in Berggießhübel. A garden tour will span several days in Austria’s Salzkammergut region. In early summer 2026, Seniors’ Academy participants will travel to Northern Germany, and as early as March, they will follow in the footsteps of Gaudí, Picasso, and Dalí in Barcelona and Catalonia.
With its wide range of educational offerings, the Seniors’ Academy provides citizens of Dresden and the surrounding area with an opportunity to stay mentally active. At the same time, it is a space for social encounters and creative engagement in interest groups (IG) and discussion circles. Available groups include digital image design, digital communication, film, painting, theater, philosophical discussion, creative writing, and contemporary witnesses.
Everyone is cordially invited to join these fascinating events! We look forward to seeing you there! Registration begins on September 29, 2025, online, at the Dresden Seniors’ Academy office (Lingnerplatz 1, 01069 Dresden), and registration is possible at any time.
