Remembering Prof. Kurt Biedenkopf – an academic visionary
TU Dresden mourns the recent death of Prof. Kurt Biedenkopf. The passing of the former Saxon Minister-President marks the loss of a long-time partner of TU Dresden. The economist significantly shaped the region’s academic landscape following the German reunification.
“TU Dresden and all other higher education institutions in the Free State of Saxony owe a lot to Prof. Kurt Biedenkopf,” remarked TU Dresden’s Rector, Prof. Ursula M. Staudinger. “Having come from an academic background, he was particularly committed to university interests during his tenure as Minister-President. He consistently sought to reinstate Saxony as a leader in academia. The present successes of TU Dresden are rooted in the visionary foresight of Prof. Kurt Biedenkopf after the fall of the Berlin Wall.”
Prof. Kurt Biedenkopf was a close friend and supporter of TU Dresden. He was the initiator and founding president of the Dresden International University (DIU), the private university of TU Dresden, which was founded in 2003. Today, it hosts more than 2,000 students from 33 countries. Around 40 bachelor's and master's programs in five departments link academic education to the global job market. For the past 15 years, Prof. Kurt Biedenkopf was DIU’s honorary president.
