The University Archive of the Dresden University of Technology preserves archival records from a period of more than 220 years.
In the meantime, more than 500 holdings with up to 1000 file units each can be comprehensively researched on site regarding the history of the TH/TU Dresden. Please note the structural organization of the University Archives, starting with the general archive tectonics and proceeding through the inventory groups to the individual holdings.
The available holdings are predominantly structured according to the provenance principle, i.e. according to the origin/place of origin of the archive records of a record creator. Within the holdings, there is a further subdivision according to classification groups.
This overview of holdings provides an initial overview and serves as an introduction to research. The linked finding aids for the respective holdings can be viewed in part as dynamic online finding aids or as PDF files.
For a better understanding, the structure of the finding aid of a holding is briefly presented and explained.
- Title of the fonds
- Classification (order groups, partly with subgroups and title groups)
- Preface (processing of the fonds, history of the fonds, history of the creator of the records, notes, abbreviations, references)
- The index of the indexed records or archival documents (mostly arranged chronologically within the classification groups, with record title, number and possibly further content information and metadata)
- Index (keyword and/or personal index)

Notes on the procedure of use
An appointment must be made in advance with our archivists for the inspection of files.
Please outline the subject to be processed and provide us with your full address and contact details.
After reviewing the relevant finding aids, please name the files to be ordered with the details of the fonds (fonds name) + the file title + the archive signature before using them.
The user room regulations must be observed during on-site use. An application for use must also be completed. The user sheets contained in the individual files are to be filled out when the source is consulted.
Good scientific work also includes listing the sources used.
This applies in the same way to copies and digital copies. If you have any questions regarding the citation of sources, the staff will be happy to advise you.
After completion of the scientific project, a specimen copy must be made available to the University Archives without being asked.
We urgently request that you keep agreed appointments or cancel them in good time, as each individual use of archive records involves intensive preparatory work and follow-up.
Please observe the regulations for the management and operation of the University Archives, in particular the regulations for use with the application for use, the Archive Law of the Free State of Saxony as well as the Saxon Data Protection Act and
the university fee and charge regulations of the TU Dresden.
