Historical collections
Within the framework of its legally defined responsibility for the records of the TH/TU Dresden, the University Archive builds up special collections and inventories that have a close connection to the history of the record-keeper and were usually created in the context of the activities of administration and science.
Collections are predominantly composed of archival records and documents that were created across the holdings on a specific topic or for factual considerations. These factual considerations may exist, for example, if overformats and drafts of drawings have to be removed from the files for reasons of conservation. This is the case, for example, with the collection of plans and drawings, which is currently under construction.
Other special collections available in the university archives are, for example, special printed matter series, such as the collection of study plans and the collection of correspondence letters. Further collections are available for plans, drawings, posters, but also photographs (paper prints, negatives, slides) and physical records. Often, these records are transferred to the archives in the course of regular file transfers and have to be stored elsewhere (e.g. pennants, plaques and medals).
Collections are usually created according to the principle of pertinence and thus differ from regular holdings, which are structured according to the principle of provenance.
Meanwhile, the University Archives can also draw on digital collections, which are built up and maintained within the framework of the Media Archive.
These are structured and made accessible by the archivists within repertories (i.e. finding aids such as, above all, finding aids) for the various user requirements.
One of the most important collections concerning the history of the university is the historical collection of documents.
Uses, especially of the plans and drawings, must be scheduled in advance, as the University Archives has limited space.
