SaxFDM – Establishing cooperative research data management support services for Saxony
Data are the fundamental basis of research. A systematic management of research data (RDM) is an integral part of overall research management. FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data make research open and transparent and are also a prerequisite for the reuse of research results. A thorough RDM makes the research process more efficient and is indispensable in data-driven research.
SaxFDM is an initiative and network of Saxon higher education and research institutions as well as organisations from the GLAM sector with currently 22 partners. It was founded in 2019 as a grassroots initiative and has since been engaged in fostering networking and cooperation as well as coordinating activities related to research data management in the Free State of Saxony.
Since November 2021, the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism is funding the project “SaxFDM – Establishing cooperative research data management support services for Saxony”. Building on the outputs of previous SaxFDM activities, the project aims to further develop and consolidate the services and the network. Project activities are divided into two strands, both of which the ZIH is involved in.
One part of the activities, carried out by a team of three research data experts, is to work on a number of aspects necessary to enhance the SaxFDM network and services. This is done in close collaboration with the SaxFDM speakers and working groups. The main task areas are:
-
Development of a state-wide RDM consultation service
-
Enhancement of the common knowledge base
-
Design of training and education offerings
-
Further development of the portfolio of technical RDM services
-
Fostering and supporting the implementation of RDM in policies and guidelines of SaxFDM partner institutions
-
Development of a sustainable business model.
Another part consists of four independently working focus projects dealing with specific topics:
-
ANNO – Anthropological Notation Ontology. Terminologies and services for the community of historic and forensic anthropology
-
OpARA4Saxony – Advancing and establishing the research data repository OpARA as a state-wide service (ZIH is one of the project partners)
-
Pudel – Publication service for scientific data models and vocabularies
-
SaxFDM-DMP – Design and piloting of a state-wide DMP service for Saxony (ZIH is one of the project partners)
