TUD-Sylber: Synergetic Teacher Education within a Framework of Excellence
The goal of the “Synergistic Teacher Education” project (TUD-Sylber) was to better connect the diverse stakeholders in teacher education within TU Dresden and its surrounding community and to coordinate their efforts in a way that would lead to sustainable progress in the training of prospective teachers. The TUD-Sylber package of measures brought together Chairs from seven faculties as well as the Center for Teacher Education and Educational Research, and focused on both the institutional structures of teacher education at TU Dresden and the content and teaching methods of the program. As a result, sustainable improvements were achieved in student support and program organization, in strengthening the connection to professional practice and research within university teaching, and in enhancing the coherence of teacher education across all phases. TUD-Sylber focused on three interrelated priorities: organizational development, quality improvement, and regional networking.
As part of the “Quality Initiative for Teacher Education” sponsored by the Federal and State governments, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funded the institutional and curricular development of teacher education. Between 2016 and 2023, TU Dresden participated in both funding phases of the Teacher Education Quality Initiative through the TUD-Sylber and TUD-Sylber² (“Synergistic Teacher Education”) program packages. In the second funding phase, the partner project “Synergistic Teacher Training – Vocational Schools” (TUD-Sylber BBS) additionally focused in a targeted manner on the unique challenges facing teachers in this field.
The TUD-Sylber
During the first funding phase from 2016 to 2019, the TUD-Sylber project focused not only on establishing new cross-disciplinary structures for teacher education but also on the research-based design and piloting of innovative teachingand learning formats. In the second funding phase, from 2019 to 2023, eight subject- and school-type-transcending subprojects aimed to consolidate and institutionalize proven concepts across the breadth of teacher education.
The eight subprojects of theTUD-Sylber2 package of measures were led by nine Chairs from seven faculties and aimed to engage additional stakeholders in teacher education within TU Dresden, as well as to foster joint efforts toward greater coherence in teacher education during the second and third phases.
