Project Description
With respect to the Federal Government’s objective to have almost all buildings be climate-neutral by 2050, concepts must be designed whereby building components can contribute more to energy efficiency. The objective of the proposed research project is to develop a multi-functional facade panel with an integrated PV module and solar thermal collector for use in heat-insulated, opaque areas of a mullion and transom facade. Using intelligent management of the individual components and their implementation within the building’s utilities and services, one panel combines four essential functions:
1. Cooling by way of nightly radiative cooling to reduce the energy consumption for cooling,
2. reducing the demand for energy with thermal conditioning of interior spaces and the required insulation thickness via an adaptive U-value in the facade panel,
3. improved power generation by cooling the PV module to cover the electricity demand, and
4. generation of heat energy for low-temperature concepts to reduce the need for heating.
