RETHINK.bridge: Design of a resource-efficient Elbe crossing using the example of the Carola Bridge Dresden
Following the tragic partial collapse of the Carola Bridge on 11 September 2024, a new chapter is now beginning for Dresden's urban development: With the support of the DFG Collaborative Research Center/Transregio 280, the DFG Priority Programme 2388: SPP 100+ and under the patronage of the state capital of Dresden, the TUD Dresden University of Technology has launched a student competition to redesign the important Elbe crossing.
The aim is to design an innovative and sustainable new bridge that not only meets functional requirements, but also blends harmoniously into the important surroundings in terms of architecture and urban development. The new bridge is intended to reconnect the two districts of Altstadt and Neustadt for motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians as well as for the streetcar and to shape the silhouette of Dresden as a modern landmark.
The competition is aimed at students from the Departments of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and related disciplines at Dresden's universities. Participation is possible as an individual project or in interdisciplinary groups of up to four people. We are looking for creative, resource-efficient and technically well thought-out designs that respect the historical significance of the site while taking into account innovative construction methods and sustainable materials.
The competition documents will be available for download via the Opal platform from April 16, 2025. Entries can be submitted until August 29, 2025. The award ceremony will take place in October 2025. A jury of experts from science and practice will select the most convincing designs.
This competition offers students a unique opportunity to play an active role in shaping the future of Dresden's urban landscape and to write their ideas into the history of bridge building, which is steeped in tradition.
Further information and access to the documents can be found here on the Institute's overview page and via the Opal platform. If access is not possible for you because you do not belong to a Saxon university, you can also have the documents sent to you by e-mail. Proof of university affiliation is required for this.
