Light microscopy provides the opportunity to display material samples at higher magnitudes to study their structure. This can be done by investigating the material surface with incident light by stereo microscope (used für fracture planes, cut and roughened planes as well as for smaller grains of minerals and rocks). Moreover, thin sections of materials can be investigated in transmitted polarized light.
