ONLINE get on top: 30. Dresdner Brückenbausym­posium

Dresden - "Continuing as before was not an option and so we are now going digital" - says Manfred Curbach, the organiser of the Dresden Bridge Building Symposium (DBBS) and Director of the Institute for Solid Construction at the Technical University of Dresden with regard to the ongoing corona pandemic. "The fact that the interest will be so great, however, illustrates the high status that the Dresden Bridge Building Symposium now enjoys." The event has been held since 1991 and enjoys increasing interest every year. But even the Corona pandemic could not diminish the digital enthusiasm of the participants. On the contrary: the organisers received almost 1,000 registrations for the 11th Symposium on Experimental Investigations of Building Structures (SEUB), which took place at the same time, the presentation of the German Bridge Building Award on 8 March and the 30th Dresden Bridge Building Symposium on 9 March. 49 exhibitors - from ArcelorMittal Europe - Long Products to Implenia Schalungsbau GmbH and solidian GmbH - will present their services and products interactively. For this, the organisers have chosen a platform that leaves nothing to be desired in terms of professionalism and visual appearance. Already at the virtual entrance, the participants will be met in the usual setting - the fascinating Dresden with a small section of the Canaletto view. The lectures themselves traditionally but now digitally take place in the virtual lecture hall centre and here too it was important to the organisers to create a familiar and at the same time active atmosphere. In addition to the digital greeting by the Saxon State Minister for Regional Development, Thomas Schmidt, the event format offers 20 expert lectures worth knowing and exciting. Gero Marzahn, Head of Division at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Structures, will speak about the federal government's new maintenance strategy for bridges on federal trunk roads. Sergej Rempel, professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, will discuss the reduced construction time for new road bridge replacements using carbon concrete, and Angelika Schmid from Werner Sobek Stuttgart AG will report on the S-Bahn crossing in the new Stuttgart 21 main station. Josiane Giese and Oliver Steinbock from the Technical University of Dresden will also outline the test loading of a slab bridge reinforced with carbon concrete as part of the SEUB.

Curiosity will also be aroused by this year's award ceremony for the German Bridge Construction Prize, which is jointly offered by the Association of Consulting Engineers VBI and the Federal Chamber of Engineers. The Bridge Building Award is presented every two years at the DBBS in order to honour the contribution of engineers to building culture and to present their outstanding achievements to the general public. No less than six nominees are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winners, who will be chosen digitally on 8 March at 6 pm. Six award-winning buildings were selected from 42 submitted applications. The nominated structures in the category "Road and Railway Bridges" include the Retheklapp Bridge in Hamburg, the bridge at Schwaig in the course of the A3 near Nuremberg and the repair of the Elster Bridge in the course of the L 673 near Neudeck, Land Brandenburg. For the category "Foot and cycle path bridges", the jury was convinced by the Trumpf bridge in Ditzingen, the Stuttgart wooden bridge at the Birkelspitze in Weinstadt and the renovation of the König-Ludwig bridge in Kempten.
