Aims
Subproject D1 provided the foundation for strengthening with textile reinforced concrete. The behaviour of slabs, beams and T-beams strengthened for bending or shear was analysed in bending tests. The aim was to derive general basis for the design of textile strengthening. For both bending and shear a design model for engineers should be developed which is suitable for the design of textile strengthening.
The first strengthening was applied to slabs spanning in one direction (wide beams), in order to improve the bearing capacity for bending. The findings of the investigation were used for the further test on rectangular beams without transverse steel reinforcement. They were strengthened with textile fabric both in the flexural tension zone and in the shear stressed areas of the beam. At the T-beams , the combined load transfer by the transversal steel reinforcement and the additional applied strengthening layer was investigated experimentally. Another main focus of the experiments was the anchoring of the strengthening layer at the compression zone of the T-beams.
In the first part of the test program, the specimens were loaded only by their self-weight during the strengthening, i.e. the flexural tension zone would remain in state I (non-cracked) with the utmost probability. In the second part, the specimens were predamaged by cyclic loading and durably preformed before strengthening. This experiment aimed at reproducing the old concrete of building in need of rehabilitation. The test results should indicate how an available cracking pattern influences the increase of the load bearing capacity by the use of textile strengthening.
At the end of the second founding period, sensitive structural parameters and limits of application were analysed in a systematic numerical study of parameters (in cooperation with subproject D2). The developed design concept for the general bending strengthening was checked. Beyond this, further experiments were planned in order to investigate how the existing findings could be transferred to advanced glass fibre and carbon fabrics with additional impregnation.
At present, experiments concerning the long term behaviour of steel reinforced concrete members with bending strengthening are conducted with a permanent loading of 70 % and 80 % of the load bearing capacity. Results of this test are not yet available.
The results of all investigations are the basis for the numerical investigations of subproject C2 und D2.
Results
Flexural strengthening without predamage
The bearing capacity of textile strengthened slabs was tested in 4-point-bending in order to avoid shear forces simultaneously occurring with bending moments in mid-span. During the test series, the number of textile layers and the percentage of steel reinforcement were varied. The increase of the bearing capacity by the use of strengthening was compared with the unstrengthened reference slabs.
T he principle properties of the textile reinforcement were tested on slabs whose strengthening layer extended beyond the support line. As the support area of the slabs cannot be reached in existing buildings, slabs were also tested whose strengthening layer ended in front of the support. The ultimate load bearing capacity was approximately equal for both alternatives, i.e. an anchorage in front of the support is sufficient because of the short bond length.

The load-displacement-diagram shows the typical behaviour of reinforced concrete with the states I (non-cracked), II (multiple cracking) and III (yielding of steel reinforcement) for all slabs. The rise of the curves is different. In comparison to the unstrengthened slabs, the load-displacement-curve of the strengthened slabs rises much more sharply. The reason for this is the larger moment of inertia due to the additionally applied strengthening layer in the uncracked state. After the multiple cracking (state III), the steeper rise of the curve is caused by the load bearing properties of the textile reinforcement.
The textile reinforcement improves both the bearing capacity and the properties of serviceability. The displacement of the strengthened slabs, related to the service load, is smaller than the displacement of the unstrengthened slabs. This is caused by the fine crack pattern.
To be able to develop a safety concept, the deformability, i. e. the ductility of the textile strengthened slabs at the ultimate limit state, is very important. Due to the difference in deformation, it is necessary to differentiate between brittle and ductile failure modes when partial safety factors have to be defined. The measure of ductility is the plastic rotation capacity.

The bearing capacity of the flexural strengthened slabs has been calculated with the well-known design model at the cross section for steel reinforced concrete extended by an additional tension force for the textile reinforcement. The model is based on the hypothesis of Bernoulli that the cross section remains straight during deformation. The bond between the steel reinforcement and the concrete as well as the bond between the textile reinforcement and the fine-grained concrete will both be assumed to be rigid.

The ultimate load depends on the ultimate strain of the strengthening layer. This ultimate strain is measured with uniaxial tension tests (subproject B1). At present, it has not been conclusively proved that the results from these tests can be used for textile-strengthened slabs. Many factors affect the ultimate load of the specimens in the uniaxial tension test. The cracking of the strain specimens in a uniaxial tension test is different from the cracking of the textile reinforced concrete layer, which works as a strengthening layer of RC-members.
Flexural strengthening with predamage
For the most parts, if rehabilitation measures are accomplished, the RC-members are still partially loaded and permanent pre-deformed. The influence of preloading or predeformation to the ultimate loading capacity of the strengthened members should be investigated in tests with (pre-)deformed slabs.
The cracked state of RC-members in need of rehabilitation due to permanent loads can be simulated in the test by the application of a predamage. The specimens were loaded by a cyclic loading before strengthening in order to produce a cracking pattern as it is done by a permanent load. The predamage of the slabs were applied in 4-point-bending tests with following load-steps:
- production of a final crack pattern by load-steps up to 80 % of the ultimate load
- 10.000 load cycles between 40…75 % of the ultimate load
- application of a (pre-)deflection of 60% of the service load
- mounting a tool for fixing the deflection in order to apply the TRC-strengthening
The strengthening with textile reinforced concrete was applied layer by layer at the upturned flexural tension zone of the slabs. Before strengthening, the cracking pattern of the predamage slabs was recorded.

The research of the predamaged slabs has shown that open cracks and predeformation respectively preloading have no bearing on the ultimate load of the strengthened slabs. The deformation concerning the pre-deformed state of slabs is a little bit lower than the deformation of strengthened slabs without predeformation under service load. The cracking process is enhanced positively by the strengthening. Existing cracks at the predamaged RC-slab before strengthening determine the position of the cracks after strengthening, but the textile strengthening layer bridged these cracks. Up to the ultimate limit state, the crack width is nearly unchanged. Additionally, new cracks can be observed, the crack spacing is halved and the crack width keeps smaller than 0.1 mm. The cracking pattern in the strengthening layer is similarly fine distributed as in the strain specimen of Subproject B1. The final cracking pattern of the predamaged slabs can be compared with the cracking pattern of the undamaged slabs. The positive behaviour of the flexural strengthening is transferable to predamaged RC-members.

On the basis of some tentative experiments it was tested how the findings of flexural strengthening could be transferred to the improved AR-glass and carbon fabrics with an additionally impregnation. The higher ductility and the increased tensile strength of the yarns increase the bearing capacity of the strengthening, too. Besides the better workability, mainly the ultimate load is clearly increased. A TRC-strengthening with carbon fabric reached the same load bearing capacity as a strengthening with impregnated AR-glass fabrics with only 1/3 of the fibre area of the latter. This means that the higher tensile strength of the carbon fibres can be used.

Shear strengthening without predamage
The transversal steel reinforcement of the T-beam was underdesigned compared to the longitudinal reinforcement in order to deliberately cause a shear failure. Nevertheless, the minimum shear reinforcement was intended to ensure the redistribution of the internal forces in the state of cracking and the support of the inclined concrete struts.

For the strengthening of the T-beam, the textile reinforcement was wrapped around the web down to the bottom line of the connected slabs. A direct anchoring of the strengthening layer inside the compression zone of the T-beam was impossible. The balance of internal forces, however, could only be reached if tensile forces in the strengthening layer were connected to the compression zone. One possibility to do so was the transfer of the tensile forces from the textile reinforcement to the web of the T-beam by the adhesive tensile bond. The additional load-transfer to the compression zone had to be done either by the tensile strength of the concrete or by the transversal steel reinforcement. If the tensile bond fails, the strengthening layer peels off the web.
[Removed image: /forschung/forschungskompetenz/sonderforschungsbereiche/sfb528/programm/projektbereich_d/teilprojekt_D1/image009.gif Alternative text: Image caption: ]
The conducted experiments confirmed this hypothesis. Up to a number of 2 textile layers, distinctive shear cracks could be observed at the sides of the web. Both with and without an additional mechanical anchoring, the strengthened T-beams failed at nearly the same ultimate load. A delamination of the strengthening layer was not detected.
At the strengthened T-beams with more than 2 textile layers the adhesive tensile bond without a mechanical anchoring failed. The ultimate load at the time of debonding was comparable with the ultimate load of the strengthened T-beams with 2 textile layers. At a number of textile layers of 3 or more, the tensile strength of the fabric could only be used if the strengthening were anchored mechanically.
In the tests, the strengthening layers were anchored with a steel angle section, which was glued directly onto the textile reinforced concrete at the side of the web with a two-component epoxy adhesive. In the vertical direction, the steel angle section was anchored with tensile bars in the slab of the T-beams. The ultimate load of the strengthened T-beams indicates the efficiency of the mechanical anchoring. The average bearing capacity is represented in the following picture.

The calculation of bearing capacity of the textile strengthened T-beams is based on three truss models which interfere with each other. The first truss model for loading capacity of the transverse steel reinforcement is equal to the strut-and-tie model of DIN 1045-1. The inclination of the concrete strut is assumed to be 33°. This angle is less inclined than the detected shear crack. The difference between the inclination of the principle compression stress and the shear crack is attributed to the crack friction.
[Removed image: /forschung/forschungskompetenz/sonderforschungsbereiche/sfb528/programm/projektbereich_d/teilprojekt_D1/image011.gif Alternative text: Image caption: ]
For textile reinforcement, the truss model of the transverse steel reinforcement is unsuitable, because the strengthening layer ends at the bottom of the slab outside of the compression zone. In this case the tensile forces have to be transferred from the strengthening layer to the compression zone by the use of vertical ties. From the compression zone, the load can be transferred to the support. The vertical ties of the second model correspond with the transverse steel reinforcement if the strengthening layer is anchored by the adhesive tensile bond, or with tensile bars of the mechanical anchoring. The diagonal tension ties run in the direction of the textile reinforcement with an inclination of 45°.
A calculation of the anchoring length is not possible at present. On the basis of the separate bond tests it can be assumed that the necessary anchoring length of the chosen textile fabric will be 7 cm at the most (Subproject C1).
The third model, the truss model of the compression arch, originated from the dimensions of the specimen. The T-beams are very compact due to their slenderness in shear a/d of about 2.7. It is assumed that a part of the applied loading is directly transferred to the support without the need of vertical or diagonal tension ties.
Long-term tests
After the exceedingly positive findings about the short-time behaviour of flexural strengthened members, the long-time behaviour is being investigated at present. The tests should provide a basis for detailed studies. The test program includes four flexural strengthened RC-slabs. Two slabs were strengthened with 3 textile layers of NWM4-011-03 and loaded with 70 % and 85 % of the ultimate load as permanent load respectively. The other two slabs were strengthened with same impregnated AR-glass and carbon fabrics, as used for the short time test. These slabs were loaded with 70% of the respective ultimate load.
