Qualification objectives
The module is intended to raise awareness of clay as a resource in contemporary
building and contribute to the preparation of widespread use in Europe. Students will be able to use earth as a building material and master the basic principles of the approach to characterizing the material through manual and laboratory tests. They are familiar with the usual load-bearing earth building methods and their dimensioning according to current standards. They are also able to assess sustainable building materials that can be used in conjunction with earth. They have in-depth knowledge of the development and application of various construction methods over time, from renovation to new construction. They are also familiar with current research fields and needs as well as the tension between tradition and digitalization.
Contents
- Development of earth building from the past to the present
- Basic building methods and building constructions in earth building
- Suitability tests and test methods
- Properties of earth as a building material
