Presentation of the Institute

Teaching and research in hydraulic engineering and technical hydromechanics.
We conduct research on river engineering, flood protection and natural watercourse development, the dimensioning of dikes, sealings or flood protection facilities, as well as on strains on revetments caused by ships in canals or by waves in coastal areas.
In teaching, we offer a wide range of courses held in German or English, as well as excursions to hydraulic engineering structures and current construction sites.

Profile

Teaching and research at the IWD cover a broad spectrum of topics: Teaching of the fundamentals of hydraulic engineering and technical hydromechanics is expanded by further courses during the period of specialisation. Our current areas of research include topics such as the flood safety of dams and detention basins via innovative sealing systems as well as the passability of flowing waters.

Staff

The staff of the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Hydromechanics comprises the Chair's offices and the Research Associates, who cover teaching tasks and conduct research in various fields. The Hubert Engels Laboratory has technical personnel for the set-up of model tests.

Chairs

The Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Hydromechanics is divided into two Chairs: The Chair of Technical Hydromechanics and the Chair of Hydraulic Engineering. The teaching staff of both Chairs offer courses for Civil Engineering students as well as for students of other faculties. Research is conducted on both numerical models and physical experiments in the Hubert Engels Laboratory.

Presentation of the Institute

The two Chairs of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Hydromechanics provide teaching and conduct research in a joint Institute (IWD) of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden, covering the following topics:

Hydrostatics and hydrodynamics
Hydraulic engineering, watercourse development, and flood management
Hydrology
Water retaining structures and hydroelectric power plants
River engineering and waterway engineering
Marine construction and coastal management
Renewable energy and use of marine energy
Hydraulic testing

The IWD dates back to the Chair of Hydraulic Engineering founded in 1890 by Hubert Engels, which has had the first permanent hydraulic engineering laboratory since 1898.
