Overview

MSc in Tropical Forestry

The MSc course in Tropical Forestry focuses on the diverse relationships of people and forests in tropical and sub-tropical regions. It integrates training in sustainable management of natural and planted forests, agro-forestry, and urban tree resources and the many interfaces with humans and society. With a transdisciplinary approach, emphasis is placed on the socio-economics of farming households, forest and land use, policy, ecology and silviculture.

Research

The research is led by an international team of post-doctoral and doctoral candidates with a multi disciplinary and analytical approach to social sciences. The research fields directly relates to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (focusing on socio-economic and socio-political aspects of forestry, rural development, management of forest resources and poverty alleviation. This is achieved through a focus on socio-economic analysis, forest based value chain analysis, research in forest landscape restoration, governance assessment, socio-political studies and power analysis.
Publicati­ons

The findings of the scientific research are published in reviewed journals, books and conference scripts on a regular basis as well as they are released as doctoral theses. Chair of Tropical and International Forestry

The Chair of Tropical and International Forestry was one of the first academic
institutions in Europe specializing on Tropical Forestry in the Global South. The specialization focuses on the influence of key actors and institutions on forest outcomes around the globe. It especially provides insights into the multi-level and multi-sector system governing forests internationally and nationally. It addresses types of actors and institutions in global and regional multi-lateralism, as well as at national, sub-national and local landscape scales.

Master of Science in Tropical Forestry

You are invited to apply for studying Master of Science in Tropical Forestry with classes starting in October every year. The MSc course has a standard full-time study of four semesters (two years): structured as three semesters of classroom studies and one semester of field research in a tropical country. The program is part of the DAAD scholarship program for development-related postgraduate courses (DAAD EPOS).

DAAD EPOS Scholarships
Students from countries of the global south are welcome to apply for a DAAD
EPOS scholarship. To be accepted for study start in October of the next year, an application must be submitted from 01 September to 30 October of the year prior. During this period, our application portal will open to accept applications. Only complete applications will be considered. Applications are not accepted via post or email.

Self-financed studies
Application deadline for the start of study in October of the same year is
- for international citizens is the 31st of May, and
- for Germans citizens the 15th of July.
Applications can be submitted online from 1 April.
