Our institute

Geography in Dresden, together with the Technical University of Dresden, looks back on a long development. Geographical studies had been possible in Dresden since 1874. After a changeable development of teaching and research, the institute was re-founded in 1989 in the tradition of Ernst Neef, Karl Herz, Ludwig Barth and Karl Mannsfeld.

Course of studies

At the Institute of Geography you can select between one of the following courses of studies: Bachelor Geography (BSc), Master Geography (MSc), Higher post of teacher at High schools, school subject Geography, post of teacher at Middle schools, school subject Geography.

Research fields

The research fields of the members of the Institute of Geography are very diverse. Because the geographers cooperate with numerous representatives of the neighboring sciences (geologists, hydrologists, sociologists, spatial planners, geoinformatics, etc.), their research areas are also broadly diversified. They range from the age determination of sediments, the reconstruction of geomorphologically processes and paleoclimatic conditions, to the analysis of demographic change and didactics of geography lessons.

The Institute of Geography

At the Institute of Geography, human-geographical and physical-geographical topics are focus of teaching and research.

The Institute of Geography has five professorships with about 30 employees. 

  • The five professorships comprise the Chair of Human Geography, two Professorships of Physical Geography, the Chair of Model-Based Landscape Ecology and the Chair of Didactics of Geography.
  • A total of about 740 students are enrolled in the degree programmes Diplom, Bachelor, Master and the teacher training courses of Geography. 
  • In order to be able to fully cover the teaching of geography, there are close links to the Chair of Geosciences and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.
