Doctoral studies and Habilitation at the Department of Geosciences
Those who wish to pursue their Doctoral studies at the Department of Geosciences of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences must first find a university teacher who is willing to supervise the dissertation scientifically. The PhD Committee of the Faculty then decides on the application for acceptance as a PhD student.
With the habilitation, the teaching qualification in a scientific subject is granted within the framework of an academic examination procedure.
PhD and Habilitation
The PhD proves that the candidate possesses special skills for independent scientific work as well as a scientific education in a special field of science that clearly exceeds the general study objective. At our department, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences awards the academic degrees of Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) and Doctor of Natural Sciences (Dr.rer.nat.).
The habilitation serves to formally establish a special qualification for independent research and teaching in a scientific subject or subject area (teaching qualification). The habilitation procedure is carried out by the faculty to which the chosen subject or field belongs. After a successful procedure, the candidate achieves the academic degree of a habilitated doctor; the suffix "habil." is added to his/her doctoral degree.
You can read more about this and the procedure in the respective regulations on the pages of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Here you will also find all the forms required for an application: https://tu-dresden.de/bu/umwelt/postgraduales
