Lecture series "Mobility4Future - On the way to climate-friendly mobility"Future Urban Mobility - Sustainable, Fair and Smart?
(Professor Emeritus of Transport Studies and Senior Research Fellow at St Anne’s College, School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford)
A global perspective would be presented on the importance of transport and the increase in mobility over the recent past, together with expectations for the growth in cities. The sustainable mobility paradigm (2008) would then be revisited to determine whether it is still relevant, and to determine whether there are new priorities that should be considered – these would include health-related concerns, inequality and distributional issues.
The limitations of space in cities will provide the main constraints on the future levels of urban mobility, even though this may be mitigated by the increased availability of clean energy and technological innovation. Strong urban governance is needed to ensure land use and transport work together to shorten trips. Finally, the presentation will address the fundamentals of sustainable mobility, and determine the means by which technology and the environmental concerns can work together to provide a high quality of life in the city.
