Participation required

The project provides important findings and basic data for mobility planning and transport policy. The anonymized evaluation of the collected data enables a differentiated view of the mobility specific to each city or municipality. An additional benefit arises from the comparison with cities or municipalities of similar size.

The project's large overall sample of more than 280,000 people also makes it possible to gain insights into cross-city trends. This includes the development of the choice of means of transport, which plays a major role in the discussion about climate- or even pandemic-related changes in mobility. In addition, the general use of car-sharing services and electric bicycles as well as the mobility of children, young people and senior citizens are analyzed.

The survey begun in January 2023 and ran for twelve months. The selected households received an announcement letter informing them about the survey and asking for their participation. The questions could conveniently be answered online or were interviewed by trained interviewers over the phone. A web chat and a telephone hotline were also available.

Participation in the survey was voluntary. Compliance with the regulations of data protection in accordance with the German Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was guaranteed.

The survey institute O.trend, commissioned by the TU Dresden, recorded and anonymized the data of the surveyed households and transfered the data to TU Dresden for evaluation.

The project called System of Representative Travel Surveys (SrV) was founded at TU Dresden as early as 1972. Due to the regular repetition of this survey at intervals of five years, findings on transport development are available over a period of almost 50 years. Among other things, they show that mobility and traffic can vary greatly from city to city and community to community. This makes it all the more important to support local transportation planning by regularly updating the data basis.

The participating municipalities and the TU Dresden asked all selected households to participate in the survey. Each household represents a part of the population as a whole and is therefore needed. Only through the active participation of as many citizens as possible can representative data be obtained, which is essential for needs-based transportation planning. 

People who rarely leave the house were also expressly called upon to participate, since the travel behavior of the entire resident population was to be recorded.
