Structure and Course of Study
The Bachelor of Business Administration and Economics comprises three sections: the compulsory area addressing the discipline's basics, followed by the elective area with numerous options for specialization, and the Bachelor's thesis. The total workload is 180 credit points. In a full-time program, 30 credit points should be acquired per semester, implying a standard period of study of 6 semesters.
You may study the program also on a flexible part-time basis. In this case, you are to earn 15 credit points per semester, and the standard period of study changes accordingly. Find more detailed information at the regulations for part-time studies at the TU Dresden (in German only).
The following stylized study plan shows the essential structure of the program:
Compulsory Area
The first semesters of the compulsory area (comprising 100 credit points in total) equip you with introductory knowledge in Business Administration, Economics, and Business Information Systems, as well as Mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Methods, and Law. In addition, there is the module Scientific and Practical Work imparting key competencies and an internship of at least four weeks in some company or institution.
You can learn more about the detailed contents of the fields by clicking on the respective links in the German version of this website. There, you will also find a semester plan indicating which modules you should attend in which semester.
Elective Area
The elective area starts in the 4th semester and offers excellent opportunities for in-depth and specialized study. You can choose from modules in the fields Business Administration, Economics, and/or Supplement almost at will. The only restriction is that of the 70 credit points of the elective area,
- at least 50 credit points must be from the fields Business Administration and/or Economics!
Within the fields, several specializations are at your disposal. Find out about the available modules and specializations and how to choose them here: Elective Area: Details.
Studying electives is possible only if you have passed the central compulsory modules of the first two semesters. See the German version of this page for their list!
Bachelor's Thesis and Bachelor's Seminar
Typically, the program ends with the Bachelor's Thesis. With that thesis, you demonstrate your skills in presenting and analyzing an economic problem in a scientific manner. The Bachelor Thesis takes four months and earns 10 credit points.
To start with the Bachelor's Thesis, you must have acquired at least 130 credit points. Also, you must begin no later than the semester after passing the last exam.
The Chairs of the Faculty have different regulations on topic assignment, registration and (formal) requirements for the thesis. Please inform yourself here at the Chair of your choice!
To be ready for the thesis, you must pass a Bachelor's Seminar. That seminar refreshes and deepens your knowledge of scientific methods and working techniques.
