​Structure and Course of Study

The Diplom program Industrial Engineering and Management is structured into a basic and a main course of study and  concludes with the Diplom Thesis. The workload is 300 credit points in total, implying a standard period of study of 10 semesters as 30 credit points ought to be achieved per semester when studying full-time.

The program can also be studied on a flexible part-time basis. In this case, 15 credit points must be earned per semester, and the standard period of study changes accordingly. More detailed information can be found in the regulations for part-time studies at the TU Dresden (in German only).

Basic Studies

Basic studies comprise the first four semesters (120 credit points). They teach the fundamentals in the various fields involved.

You acquire basic knowledge in Business Administration, Economics, Business Information Systems, and Engineering. This is complemented by Mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Methods, and the module Scientific and Practical Work, which imparts key qualifications.

Main Course of Study

The main course of study (180 credit points) of the subsequent 6 semesters is surely interdisciplinary, offering a broad-based in-depth education in both business and economics and engineering.

Entering the main course of study is possible only once you have passed the core modules of the basic studies. See the German version of this website for their list!

The following excerpt from the study plan shows the essential elements of the main course of study. There is a compulsory area (in yellow), an elective area (in gray), and the Diplom Thesis with the Research Seminar (in blue).

Compulsory Area

The small compulsory area comprises a module on methodological principles in semesters 5 and 6, an internship at some later point, and the Research Seminar, coordinated with the Diplom Thesis, see below.

Elective Area

With 135 credit points, the elective area dominates the main course of study. There are numerous modules in the fields of Business Administration and Economics, Engineering, and Supplement, among which you can choose. 

The minimum number of credit points to be achieved in these fields depends on the track chosen.

Tracks

There are two tracks available: Standard and International. You opt for the International track just by acquiring 20 credit points at a foreign university. Otherwise, you are on the Standard track.

• In the Standard track, you must acquire at least 45 credit points from the fields Business Administration and Economics and Engineering each.
• In the International track, it is just 35 credit points per field.

Diplom Thesis and Research Seminar

The Diplom Thesis (20 credit points) and the Research Seminar usually consume the final semester. For the Diplom Thesis, you will work independently ans scientifically on a topic in business administration and economics. The duration is four months. You get the necessary analytical and methodological skills and repeated feedback from your supervisor during the Research Seminar.

You are allowed to start with the Diplom Thesis only if you have already acquired 130 credit points in total before. Also, you must begin no later than the semester after passing the last exam.

The Chairs of the Faculty have different regulations on topic assignment, registration and (formal) requirements for the thesis. Please inform yourself here at the Chair of your choice!
