Mission4Sax - Optimized surgical treatment and trial management of oncological patients in East Saxony
Initial situation
The number of cancer cases is continuously increasing. Survival and recovery rates are closely linked to surgical expertise, the use of advanced medical technology, and innovative surgical techniques. In rural regions, limited healthcare infrastructure poses a significant challenge. This makes it necessary to bundle competencies and resources in order to ensure high-quality care. At the same time, there is considerable potential for improvement in routine care and cross-sector collaboration. Access to clinical trials—which could offer new treatment options—is often limited in peripheral areas. Furthermore, there is a lack of detailed patient data, which is essential for systematically evaluating and further developing oncological therapies.
Our objectives
The aim of this project is to sustainably improve cancer care in the region of Eastern Saxony. To achieve this, a comprehensive model for cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration will be developed and established. At the heart of the project is the goal of making the expertise of an oncological competence center accessible to all patients—regardless of whether they live in urban or rural areas.
Key objectives include:
-
Improving recovery and survival rates through optimized treatment processes
-
Ensuring fast and structured communication among all care providers
-
Early integration into tumor boards and rapid transfer to specialized centers
-
Building a cross-regional network of medical expertise and knowledge
To achieve this, we will focus on:
-
Establishing a structured basis for exchange and connected patient management systems
-
Harmonizing and aligning guideline-based patient care pathways
-
Facilitating access to clinical trials and innovative surgical techniques
-
Strengthening cooperation and resource sharing, especially among rural hospitals
This project makes a valuable contribution to quality assurance and equity in cancer care. The resulting insights and structures are intended to serve as a model for other regions in Germany.
