AI-based Mentoring for Women in STEAM Studies (AIMS)

AIMS is a European cooperation project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union, that supports women in STEAM fields at the start of their studies and throughout the decisive first semesters. At its heart is an AI Mentor in the form of a human-like avatar. Unlike a chatbot that simply answers questions, the AI Mentor talks with students, gets to know them and keeps their goals and progress in view. Alongside personal mentoring, it offers individual support whenever students need it: finding one's footing in everyday study life, building confidence, and developing both subject-specific and creative skills.

The AI Mentor

Designed for integration into the learning platforms students already use, the AI Mentor draws on course materials and responds to each student's individual situation.

Results and Resources

A MOOC that prepares students for learning with AI and the AI Mentor, a gender-sensitive e-course that supports university teachers in working with it, and further open educational resources, all freely available via the Erasmus+ Project Results Platform.

Our Approach

In AIMS, AI is part of good education: it supports and complements teaching and human guidance. From the outset, technical development goes hand in hand with research on teaching and learning in higher education and with questions of AI ethics. We follow the STEAM approach, which integrates the arts into science, technology, engineering and mathematics and makes creativity and critical thinking an integral part of education.

Our tools are created together with students and educators, tested in real learning environments and designed to remain in use at universities across Europe beyond the end of the project.
