Title: "Monocytes and Macrophages - origins matter..."
Abstract: Tissue-resident macrophages (TRM) comprise a conglomerate of cells that seeded tissues during fetal development and cells that derive postnatally from adult classical monocytes (CM). The degree of monocytic contribution differs among organs, related to their environmental exposure, physical stress, and history of challenges and age. Recent studies have shown that also CM are heterogeneous and can derive from distinct bone marrow precursors. We will discuss our recent evidence that this CM dichotomy translates into TRM heterogeneity. Moreover, we will report our finding that, unlike assumed, monocyte-derived microglia accumulate with age in healthy brains and why these cells present a risk factor for CNS for pathology.
