How cancer cells hibernate

Physicians and scientists from the Carl Gustav Carus Medical Faculty Dresden at the University Hospital Dresden have taken over the coordination of the new nationwide priority programme 2084 of the German Research Foundation. It is the first medical DFG programme of its kind in Dresden. Over the next six years, scientists from all over Germany will work closely together to detect bone metastases after a previous breast or prostate cancer early and prevent their development. A total of 7.8 million euros is available for the priority programme "μBONE - Colonisation and interactions of tumour cells within the bone microenvironment". Around three million of the budget will go to the Dresden location. The work will start in the coming weeks. "The coordination of the new priority programme is representative of our many years of experience in cancer and bone research," says Prof. Heinz Reichmann, Dean of the Medical Faculty. "Cooperation with the doctors at the university hospital is particularly important."
