TEACHING WITH DIGITAL MEDIA IN SAXONY
In the project "Teaching with Digital Media in Saxony - UndiMeS", researchers from the TU Dresden and the University of Leipzig are developing new approaches for teacher training and continuing education in the digital age. The project focuses on the initial and further training of media competence and media education for future teachers (subproject at the University of Leipzig) as well as for teachers who are already in the profession (subproject at TU Dresden).
"Teaching with Digital Media in Saxony (UndiMeS)" is a joint project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which consists of a sub-project of the University of Leipzig and a sub-project of the CODIP of the TU Dresden. The background to the project is that media education of students can only be promoted if teachers themselves have their own media education, which includes, in particular, digitization-related competence. This involves both media-didactic and media-pedagogical content as well as methodological-didactic questions and challenges. However, the digital transformation in everyday school life is still only taking place to a lesser extent. In order to increase this share, efforts have been made to expand the technical infrastructures in schools (cf. Digitalpakt). The logical step now is to support the teaching staff in successfully integrating the structures that have been built into the classroom and in utilizing the potential of digital media in everyday school life.
In the "UnidMeS" project, the media competence and media education of teachers are trained and further developed. The project, which is designed to be holistic, focuses on all three phases of teacher qualification (studies, teacher training, continuing education in professional life), which makes it unique in Germany. The sub-project of the CODIP of the TU Dresden focuses on the third phase, the continuing education and training of teachers, and is thus aimed at those who already are in the profession. One of the main aims of the subproject is to provide them with an in-service, online opportunity to learn and/or deepen the use and handling of digital media. At the same time, strengthening their media skills, communicating opportunities and risks, and demonstrating multifaceted scenarios for use will complete the offering thematically. The project team of the CODIP focuses on generally applicable scenarios in order to provide teachers with the framework and competencies to define and implement their own teaching options.
The online continuing education program, which is being developed by the CODIP at TU Dresden, is an in-service qualification opportunity for teachers with regard to media education and media literacy. Nothing new so far? Yes, there is, because the offering is being designed independently of school types and is also intended to function, as far as possible, independently of the ordinances of individual federal states. What does that mean? It means that within the sub-project, conditions for effectiveness and success factors for such a training measure will be researched, and on the basis of this, a benchmarking will take place that can transcend state borders - at least in the area of teacher training.
In the qualification opportunity developed in the subproject, methods will take precedence. Conceived as a pedagogical double-decker, teachers will be taught how to use digital media in the classroom context (learning with media) as well as how to critically discuss media (learning about media) by demonstrating various digital use scenarios and allowing them to be experienced and reflected upon in the learning process of the teachers themselves.
All information on the overall project and current project developments can be found on the UndiMeS project website.
