Dr. Anja Johansen is senior lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Dundee, Scotland. She has researched extensively on comparative policing in Britain, France and Prussia, ca. 1848 to 1914, with specific focus on the relationship between police and public in their various social, political, and cultural contexts. This includes patterns of police violence and misconduct; citizens’ complaints against the police; & accountability and legitimacy. She is currently working on a monograph comparing complaints cultures in London, Paris and Berlin, ca. 1880 to 1914. She is also Principal Investigator for the UK team on a three-year international and interdisciplinary project on recent developments and reform of Independent Police Complaints Bodies in the UK, Germany, France, Canada, and Japan.
