Educational experiments in nutrition and home economics: competence development of prospective teachers (FoodLabSkills)

01.09.2024 - 31.03.2026 | Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre (StIL) |
Teachers in the professional field of nutrition and household must have basic knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics as well as skills in scientific knowledge acquisition in order to be able to didactically prepare scientific phenomena relevant to the profession. The use of experiments as teaching-learning arrangements is highly suitable for this. However, the current literature often describes deficits in scientific propaedeutic work and experimental teaching among teachers in everyday school life. For this reason, the Chair of Nutrition and Home Economics / BBS is establishing a new module to promote experimental skills with regard to the methodological and didactic design of teaching-learning experiments in lessons structured by learning fields. The teaching concept aims to enable prospective teachers to design science-based lessons, but also to strengthen the understanding of science education in teacher training for vocational schools.

Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft, Kultur und Tourismus (SMWK) |
On 15.08.23 we can start our new third-party funded project "Degree of digitalization of operational communication processes and digital and linguistic-communicative skills of skilled workers" (DigiKomm 4.0). The three-year project analyses communication processes and their degree of digitalization in companies and businesses in the occupational field of nutrition and home economics, which currently includes 36 professions. We are delighted about the project funding.
The project is co-financed with tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament. Click here for the project description on the website of the Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB).

The project content is an analysis of the current state of nutrition education, both in terms of specialist knowledge and advisory skills, in various health professions within pediatric and adolescent medicine. The aim is to provide starting points for improved skills transfer and implementation regarding the nutritional knowledge and behavior of children and adolescents, which can thus contribute to a healthier adolescence.

The third-party funded project is located in the field of science communication. It deals with aspects of gamification in vocational training in nutrition and home economics. It is funded by the VW Foundation. With the professional support of an experienced gamification partner, we have implemented the "Booster Game" escape room on the topic of food safety. From July 9, 2022 to August 28, 2022, this could be played in the German Hygiene Museum Dresden. At the following other locations, interested young people and trainees in the field of nutrition and home economics can take on the challenge of tricky puzzles:
- October 01, 2022, Festival of Science on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Volkswagen Foundation, Hanover, Herrenhausen Castle (puzzle sections)
- in spring 2023, Münster University of Applied Sciences(link to press release)
- in summer 2023, Heidelberg University of Education
