TechLA – Teacher Training – Vocational Schools
The commercial-technical subjects of the Teacher Training – Vocational Schools program provide all the knowledge and skills needed to work creatively, inspiringly, and innovatively at vocational school centers as well as in adult education, continuing education, and professional development. Prior vocational training allows you to contribute your experience and insights to the program. However, it is also possible to pursue this degree without a vocational certificate; in this case, you must provide proof of a one-year professional internship before being admitted to the First State Examination. This can be completed as part of our TechLA+ program option during the course of your studies.
In the industrial-technical teacher education program, students must select a primary vocational subject and either a general subject or a second vocational subject. Certain combination restrictions apply, which are listed in the Student Information System (SINS).
In the technical teacher education program, students can study the following vocational subjects:
- Civil Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
- Color Technology, Interior Design, and Surface Technology
- Wood Technology
- Metallurgy and Mechanical Engineering
- Textile Engineering and Apparel (the program is offered as part of the IngPäd+ track, primarily in cooperation with the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau)
The degree program has a standard period of study of ten semesters, i.e. a total of five years.
The "Teacher Training - Vocational Schools" degree program in Saxony is completed with the First State Examination. The title "Diplom Berufspädagog:in" can also be obtained by defending the final thesis.
As a teacher at vocational schools, you have the opportunity to secure a future as a teacher in the public sector with the possibility of becoming a civil servant. There are opportunities for promotion within the school (subject leader, head teacher). However, there are also opportunities to work, for example, in the areas of sales or training in industrial and trade companies or in the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. Employment as a Research Associate at universities with the opportunity to work on research projects and complete a doctorate is also conceivable.
Yes, with a degree as a Techniker:in / Meister:in you automatically have the university entrance qualification (HZB) and can therefore study any degree program and thus also Teacher Training - Vocational Schools. The SchulAQ study option offers technicians and master craftsmen the possibility of a dual study option in the industrial-technical departments of Teacher Training - Vocational Schools. In addition to studying "Teacher Training - Vocational Schools", students are employed at a vocational school center in Saxony, where they have the opportunity to participate in everyday school life and provide support in the classroom.
Teacher Training - Vocational Schools can be studied in Saxony at the University of Leipzig and TU Dresden. In Saxony, it is also possible to first complete a Bachelor's degree in "Engineering Education" at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences or the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau and then complete the "Teacher Training - Vocational Schools" course as part of IngPäd+ at TU Dresden.

It is possible to have credits from master craftsman or technician training as well as credits from previous studies recognized. The extent of the crediting depends on the fit between the previous qualification and the content of the chosen departments/subjects. The academic advisors of the respective departments will be happy to assist you with the credit transfer procedure before you start your studies.

Various school internships take place as part of the Teacher Training - Vocational Schools course at TU Dresden. A four-week work placement (Blockpraktikum A) is completed in the third semester. This is followed by the practical school exercises (SPÜ) for both departments / subjects in the fifth semester, where the first teaching experiments take place under supervision. This is followed in the seventh semester by four weeks of school internships in both departments/subjects with a larger proportion of supervised teaching (block internships B).
